Taught entirely in English

This course includes material from the Weimar Republic, the Nazi period, and, the post-WWII era in the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). In exploring the literature, films, art, and architecture representative of these periods, we will concentrate on three aspects of National Socialism: its roots in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Europe; its manifestation in everyday life during the Third Reich; and, its legacy for post-WWII Germans individually and collectively. Students will be asked to consider socio-political and aesthetic elements of books and films in the context of the times and places they were made, a context provided through short lectures and background reading. The aim of this class is to dispel our myths and complicate our understanding of the Nazi period. We will find that the material treated in this course is not merely representative of another culture and history, but also pertinent to our experience of our own cultures as well.
