First Ohio German Studies Workshop (OGSW) takes place at Ohio State

Conference Room in the Pfahl Conference Center at Ohio State

The first Ohio German Studies Workshop (OGSW) took place on October 11 at the Blackwell Conference Center on the Ohio State Campus. Sponsored and organized by the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Ohio State, it included German Studies faculty from ten institutions of higher education across the state.

The workshop consisted of four panels. The first session had three contributions on topics related to literature and culture, emphasizing the current research projects of Nicole Thesz (Miami University), Peter Yang (Case Western Reserve University), and Edgar Landgraf (Bowling Green State University). The focus of the second panel was film and visual culture and included presentations by Mariana Ivanova (Miami University), Mareike Herrmann (College of Wooster), and Nik Sathe (Ohio University).

After a break for lunch, the workshop turned to issues of language teaching and learning. Participants in the third panel were Erik Angelone (Kent State University), Adi King (Ohio University), and Wonneken Wanske (Ohio State University). The final panel in the proceedings examined issues related to technology in the classroom and institutional concerns. Contributors were Gary Baker (Denison University), Elizabeth Hamilton (Oberlin College), and Gabriele Dillmann (Denison University).

There was general agreement that the OGSW accomplished its stated objective of providing a forum for German Studies faculty in Ohio to learn about the scholarship and teaching of their colleagues, and to understand the challenges facing German Studies in the state at different institutions. There was great enthusiasm for the OGSW to become a regular event. GLL is pleased to sponsor this event annually, and the Department is already planning the second OGSW at the same venue on November 14, 2015.
