The Dutch Program.

Dutch, a Germanic language like English and German, is spoken today by over 25,000,000 people in The Netherlands, Belgium, and in former colonies all over the world.

Dutch 571 -- Basic Dutch for Reading -- 5 Credit Hours

Fundamentals of grammar for reading purposes, applicable to students in humanities, sciences, social sciences, and professional schools. This course offers an introduction to Dutch for students who want to read the language for research or just like to learn it for the sheer fun of knowing another Germanic language. Though the class is essentially geared to the reading of Dutch, we'll try to do as much oral work as time and interest allow.

  • Prereq: Grad standing; Undergraduates are welcome with permission of the instructor.

Dutch 572 -- Dutch for Research -- 3 Credit Hours

Continuation of the principles learned in 571; applied readings in students' disciplines; emphasis on close translation, grammatical analysis, and vocabulary building.

Prereq: 571 or equiv or permission of instructor.
