Definitions of Reading “Deficiencies,” and Their Impact on Education

Known widely for his research on the social and cultural history of children and childhood, Professor Sandin’s talk will relate the changing views of influential scholars on reading and writing problems, such as dyslexia, to the general development of educational policies in the 20th c. Swedish welfare state. His historical approach opens the way for an analysis of how specific social and political conditions shaped definitions of deficiencies, and how competing claims exist parallel to National politics and the changing role of children/ children’s rights in national policies.
