The graduate program in German at Ohio State is among the oldest and most distinguished in the United States. Today, we offer MA and PhD programs that provide students a firm grounding in the core knowledge of our field while encouraging the pursuit of interdisciplinary inquire and research.
In our department, 11 graduate faculty members conduct research on topics ranging from medieval education to poetry to postcolonial studies, working in fields from literary criticism to film studies to applied linguistics to translation. Excellent teacher training, funded conference travel and study abroad, an annual graduate student conference, and other opportunities offer numerous ways to enrich student learning and professional development. Our intellectual diversity and myriad opportunities, complemented by a warm and collegial community, make our program a great place to delve into German studies and develop the skills and expertise for a rewarding career inside or outside of academia.

It may be of interest to you to know, that Columbus, the home of The Ohio State University, is now the largest city in Ohio, the metropolitan area population having grown to some 1,500,000 inhabitants in recent years.
There are pockets of history in the city, such as German Village and Schiller Park, which are south of the main campus and easy to reach by city bus (COTA).
In addition to its several major league sports teams, the city offers many entertainment and cultural attractions, including excellent theater and dance, a lively arts scene, and music performances that range from classical to jazz, folk to hip-hop, and pop to rock. From Jazz at the historic Lincoln Theatre to ballet and comedy shows at the Riffe Theatre Complex, the city offers a wealth of scintillating performances.
Among the many galleries and museums found in Columbus is the Columbus Museum of Art, the award-winning Center of Science and Industry, the Ohio History Center, and Ohio State University's own Wexner Center for the Arts, renowned for its exhibitions of contemporary art and for its sponsorship of performances of all kinds. Right here on the main campus, graduate students can walk across the street from the Hagerty Hall of Languages and Cultures to explore the Arts District, featuring our newly completed Timashev Family Music Building, as well as participate in upcoming events through Urban Arts Space.
