Cynthia D. Porter in Bonn
.
Cynthia D. Porter, Assistant Professor of German, took part in the 2025-2026 faculty exchange program with the Germanistik department at the University of Bonn. Cynthia was well-paired with Dr. Marius Reisener, resulting in their co-designed and facilitated the GLL graduate course "Meta/Physik: Investigations and Negotiations of Biopolitics in the Long 20th Century." The exchange culminated with Cynthia traveling to Bonn to teach a block seminar titled "Die Haut als Medium des 20. Jahrhundert in Deutschland: Körper und Körpermodifikation" ("The Skin as Medium in 20th Century Germany: Body and Body Modification").
In a moment of Buckeye-brush with chance in Bonn, Cynthia bumped to the GLL doctoral candidate Jorge Ernesto Clavo Abbass, as she made her way to give her lecture "The Skin as Medium in 20th Century Germany: Body and Body Modification." What can we say? OH - IO!
Cynthia's summer tour to Germany was further enhanced by an invitation to give a lecture, "From Protection to Persecution: Lang’s Fury and the Perils of Sentimentality in Policing," in the Amerikanistik (American Studies) department at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Coupled with her presentation on German émigré Fritz Lang and his continued resonance in contemporary American culture and history, Cynthia engaged in public-facing scholarship by providing an introduction to a screening of Lang's Fury at the Filmhaus Nürnberg. Capping off an exciting trip was a lasting impression: a cameo by Cynthia, discussing her research on an episode of Plusminus, selected for inclusion by Germany’s public service broadcasters, ARD.
