The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures proudly salutes the student recipients of its annual awards!

Saatvika Vyakaranam (photo right) was selected to receive the Wolfgang Fleischhauer Award, established in honor of a professor of German linguistics at Ohio State from 1936-1978. This award, generously funded by the Robert F. Gagel/Margo Cox Endowment Fund, provides approximately $6,000 to support a German major’s senior-year of study. Saatvika is double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and German in addition to Dentistry.
Adam Rahl received the 2025 Dieter Cunz Award for the outstanding undergraduate student with a major or minor in German. Adam is majoring in German with a minor in LGBTQ+ Studies. He is a thoughtful and hardworking student who pursues a broad range of academic interests with verve and vigor.

Benjamin Brobst, an Aerospace Engineering major who minors in German, won the Undergraduate Project Award in German for his excellent project THEMA: Gerechtigkeit / FILME: Aus dem Nichts und Der BaaderMeinhof Komplex.
Melanie Sall, an Environmental Policy & Decision Making major who is currently studying in Europe, won Undergraduate Project Award in English with her superb project Methods of Revenge in Frank Schatzing’s, The Swarm, tied directly to forms of human exploitation of the environment.
And last but not least, Marcel Foerster was selected as this year's recipient of the Graduate Associate Distinguished Teaching Award in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. His nominators were impressed by his dedication, pedagogical innovation, and ability to create a dynamic, positive, and engaging classroom atmosphere. Marcel uses “a wide variety of teaching strategies, such as partner work, group discussions, and individual work, thereby ensuring that all students are actively engaged. In addition to that, he effectively integrates audiovisual materials that enhance comprehension and retention, which makes his lessons not only informative, but also stimulating. Marcel’s teaching persona is both charismatic and approachable, which earns him the trust and enthusiasm of his students.” It was also noted that Marcel “demonstrates a strong commitment to collaboration and professional development and is always the first to share valuable teaching material, innovative ideas, and his teaching experience.”
