Porter Delivers Lecture on Tattoos in 20th Century German History

On Monday, March 17, GLL's Cynthia Porter delivered the keynote lecture at the annual induction ceremony of Delta Phi Alpha National German Honor Society at the University of Arkansas.

Cynthia shared insights from her developing manuscript, Tattoos in 20th Century German Culture: A Media History, in which she examines the tattoo as a multimodal tool for exploring social perceptions of bodily value in relation to gender, race, and capital. Her talk, titled "Skin as a Cultural Medium in 20th Century German History," focused on the role of tattoos and their relationship to the body.

In her research, Cynthia develops a media history of tattooing by breaking it down into what she argues are its fundamental components: visual art, written text, and the moving image.
