Graduate students are guaranteed funding for a minimum of six years (or four years if entering with an M.A.). These competitive funding packages are composed of health insurance, tuition and fee waivers, and teaching fellowships.

Our students are also specially eligible for additional funding, including study abroad fellowships, University Fellowships, Max Kade fellowships, and Presidential dissertation fellowships.

The department further offers our graduate students a separate study abroad fellowship opportunity at the TU Dresden. In addition, students at Ohio State regularly compete for national and international fellowships, including Fulbright and DAAD awards, to secure additional years of funding.

Moreover, students who require additional time to complete the dissertation have the opportunity to continue teaching beyond their sixth year. In over a decade, no student has left the program for lack of funding.

Ample support will be provided to graduate students who present at conferences. Additional research support is available through the summer Dr. Henry Kratz, Jr. research fellowship (at least $2,000), the Felice M. Grad Endowed Scholarship Fund, and various university graduate school awards (Ray Awards, Humanities Grants and Awards, Discovery Theme Grants, e.g. “Sustainability,” “Migration.”).

Our generous package, combined with the low cost of living in Columbus, makes our graduate students among the best-funded in the United States.
