Mark L. Louden is a professor of German and co-director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He received his undergraduate and graduate training in Germanic linguistics at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Texas at Austin from 1988 until 2000, at which point he joined the Madison faculty. A fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch, most of his research and public outreach have been focused on this language and other German-American varieties, as well as Yiddish. He has been a guest professor at the Universities of Gießen, Marburg, and Freiburg. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals and is a member of the International Advisory Board for the Institut für Deutsche Sprache–Mannheim. He is the author of the forthcoming book, Pennsylvania Dutch: The Story of an American Language.
