Student opportunities on campus, in Columbus, and abroad

Graduate students engaging in Fußball excitement

The long tradition of German at the Ohio State University has engendered a large and vibrant community of people interested in German Studies, offering unrivaled opportunities for graduate students to develop professional skills while pursuing their academic goals.

Thanks to the widespread interest in German at Ohio State and the international reputation of the department, the graduate students organize our annual GGSA conference, attracting speakers from across the country. The graduate students choose the topic, select the speakers, and coordinate the event themselves. In so doing, they gain new career competencies and help establish the trajectory of the discipline.

A longstanding exchange program with the TU Dresden further provides students with possibilities to advance their individual research projects, refine their language skills, and become part of an international academic network. Through this program, our students have several options to study abroad and they gain helpful connections when applying for competitive fellowships like the DAAD and Fulbright awards.

We also encourage our graduate students
to pursue meaningful interdisciplinary work related to their interests
outside of the classroom.

Here in Columbus, Ohio, unique opportunities abound for our graduate students. For example, the city has been a base of German immigration to the United States since the 1860s. Just south of campus, in the historic “German Village” neighborhood, you can seek out special events in Schiller Park or head to the Book Loft for readings and unique events. Plus ...

music on stage
  • Columbus is home to a vibrant live music scene. A multitude of renowned musicians and up-and-coming bands on the cusp of renown play at quirky venues throughout the city. We also enjoy a premier symphony and a thriving opera scene.
  • From Jazz at the historic Lincoln Theatre to ballet and comedy shows at the Riffe Theatre Complex, the city offers a wealth of scintillating performances
  • Right here on the main campus, graduate students can walk across the street from the Hagerty Hall of Languages and Cultures to explore the Arts District, featuring our newly completed Timashev Family Music Building, as well as participate in upcoming events through Urban Arts Space.
  • Our Major League Soccer team, the Columbus Crew (Leagues Cup 2024 champions!), hosts an international friendly with a Bundesliga team every year.

Clearly, there is no shortage of events and cultural offerings for graduate students hoping to engage in remarkable performances either on- or off-campus.

Combined with the low cost of living, Ohio State’s beautiful campus, and the institution’s world-class resources, the rich cultural life makes Columbus, Ohio an ideal place to pursue your graduate education.

Our students regularly win DAAD and Fulbright awards and can elect to study abroad in Dresden.
