Important Update!

Dr. Elizabeth Ashman Rowe (Cambridge) had been scheduled to give a public lecture on Icelandic manuscripts followed by a private workshop on Icelandic palaeography on Thursday, Nov. 14. Unfortunately, due to the U.S. gov't shutdown, her travel papers were delayed by at least 6 months, and she will not be able to come to Columbus to present.

After much searching, we are in luck! Dr. Heather Key (University College Cork) has agreed to come to Columbus in Dr. Rowe's place and give a lecture on Early Irish scripts and abbreviations and a workshop on Early Irish scripts and manuscript decorations.

While medieval Irish materials are a bit more distant from our original topic, Early Irish manuscripts and scripts did influence the later development of Scandinavian, particularly Icelandic, manuscripts and palaeography, and medieval Irish and Scandinavian cultures have a long and complex history of interaction.

Professor Key will give a talk that is open to the general public: But Everybody Knows...! A Survey of Insular Scripts and 'Oddities'" about Early Irish Scripts and Abbreviations. At 4:00 pm in 150AB Thompson Library, Professor Key will give a workshop, Scribal Traditions Then and Now: the Use of Early Irish Palaeographic Techniques in Medieval and Modern Scripts, in which participants will learn hands-on how the scripts were written, practice transcribing manuscript passages, and learn how to create simple knotwork decorations like the ones decorating famous Irish manuscripts like the Book of Kells. Paper and some calligraphy pens will be provided, but if you prefer to use your own calligraphy pens, please feel welcome to do so!  Space for the workshop is limited. Please contact the OSU Saga Club (osusagaclub@gmail.com) if you are interested in attending the workshop and for other questions concerning these programs. Professor Key will also be speaking at Texts and Contexts.
