Berni Beringer’s research interests lie in Intercultural Communicative Competences (ICC), Foreign- and Second Language Teaching, German (sports) culture, and Pennsylvania Dutch writer and poet Henry Harbaugh. He is currently focusing his research on two projects.
His first research project focuses on foreign language teaching, more specifically on tasks and methods that help foster learner’s ICC. In this project he analyzes new approaches to language learning, like the use of Mitwachsenden Karten in the language classroom, and how such methods help build learners’ language skills and competences.
Berni’s second research project is his dissertation, which focuses on the concept of Heimat and how it is depicted in Henry Harbaugh’s Pennsylvania Dutch poetry. The project analyzes Harbaugh’s magazine, The Guardian, and his Pennsylvania Dutch poems to gain insight into Harbaugh’s understanding of Heimat as a native Pennsylvania Dutch speaker of the 19th century.
Berni completed his First (2016) and Second (2020) State Examination for Secondary Education in English, Geography, German, and History with a certificate for bilingual teaching at the Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg, Germany. Between his First and Second State Examination, he studied at the University of Alabama, where he earned a Master of Arts in German Literature (2018).
Before joining the Ohio State University, Berni worked as a Teaching Assistant for German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2020-2024), at the University of Alabama (2016-2018), and at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA (2013). He also worked as lecturer for German at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (2024).
In Germany, he worked as a teacher at the Realschule am Giersberg in Kirchzarten (2018-2020), and in the Corporate Social Responsibility and Educational Department at the Sport-Club Freiburg Football School (2010-20).
